Resharing Shares
Use cases
There are 4 main types of use cases
- Resharing a content item that was originally shared as a content item
- Resharing a collection that was originally shared as a collection
- Resharing a content item that was originally shared in a collection
- Resharing a content item in a new collection that was originally shared in a collection
What kinds of things are likely to be shared?
- 1st order Shares: calendars, calendar events, contact groups, individual contacts
- 2nd order Shares: tasks, notes
- Not likely to be shared but possible: email
Specific user scenarios:
- Type 1 use case: Work colleague or Friend shares contact info with me. A mutual colleague / friend wants to get in touch with them. I pass on their contact info to mutual colleage / friend by resharing their contact info.
- Type 1 use case: Work colleague invites me to a meeting. I think of another colleague who should really join in on the meeting. I reshare meeting invitation with new colleague.
- Type 1 use case: Friend invites me to a party asking me to bring along anyone I'd like. I reshare party invite to 3-4 other friends.
- Type 2 use case: I share my Home calendar with my spouse. My spouse would like to reshare the calendar with our children.
- Type 2 use case: I share my emergency contacts collection with my spouse. My spouse would like to reshare my emergency contacts collection with her administrative assistant.
- Type 2 use case: Work colleague shares team Todo list with me. A new person joins our team. I would like to reshare the Todo list with the new person.
- Type 2 use case: I put together a collection of Notes of resource information in case of emergencies (ie. earthquakes, fires, terrorist attacks). I share it with colleagues and friends. They would like to reshare it with their colleagues and friends.
- Type 3 use case: A colleague has put together a Team calendar and shared it with everyone on the team. I would like to invite a guest speaker to one of our weekly Team meetings. I would like to reshare just the one Team meeting with the guest.
- Type 3 use case: A colleague shares their ADF Conference contact group with me. I think another colleague of mine should really talk to the director of the ADF conference. I reshare the directors contact info with the second colleague.
- Type 4 use case: I subscribe to a friend's "Performances I'm going to" calendar. I would like to attend one of the performances with my friend and my spouse. I copy a pointer to the single event onto my Home calendar which I share with both my spouse and my administrative assistant.
- Type 4 use case: I subscribe to my company's "Interesting Speakers" calendar. I think my Team should really attend one of the "Interesting Speakers" events. I copy a pointer to the single event to my Team's events calendar which I share with everyone on my Team.
- Type 4 use case: I subscribe to my company's contacts directory. I label all of these contacts: Sphere of Life=Work. As a result, all of the contacts in my company's contacts directory also live in my Work contact group (which includes all of my business contacts). I reshare my Work contact group with my spouse.
- Type 4 use case: I subscribe to my Team's Todo list. There is one task that is really an inter-Team task. I copy a pointer to the task to my Inter-Team Todo list which I Reshare with all Teams.
Recommendation
Proposal from MimiYin, 07 Apr 2004 Allow all of these different types of Resharing with the caveat that there is one single ACL for all items and collections. Therefore if A shares with B and B reshares with C. The ACL list for A, B and C should include A, B and C. I think the above use cases demonstrate that the most common sharing use cases are between very close-knit groups of people where everyone would really like to know the ENTIRE ACL. I think there is also a cognitive inconsistency if the ACL is different in different people's repositories for a single Share. ACLs right now live in the Detail view of the Share and so by definition, they are within the Sharing cloud and all things in the Sharing cloud should look the same for all recipients of the Share.
[OI?]
- Do we allow Read-only users to reshare as well?
- MimiYin, 07 Apr 2004: I think we can without breaking anything.
