Email
The first release of Chandler, code-named "Canoga", will help users manage high volumes of information -- particularly email -- better. In order for Canoga to be able to implement its compelling features, it needs access to multiple data types and powerful filters. See
the discussion of Canoga's compelling email features.
As the CSG campuses have multiple, different centralized servers for multiple data types, the follow-on to Canoga for higher-education (code-named "Westwood") must have a way of simultaneously accessing all the various data types. We believe that the best way to address that issue for email is by compositing the data -- treating the IMAP repository as the canonical repository and storing metadata in Westwood. For performance reasons, Westwood will also cache (or
hoard) some IMAP data on the local machine. How much data to store locally will be dynamically determined based on bandwidth and storage availability. For more details, see
Lou's IMAP inter-operability document.
