Personal Background

Bart is a 31 year old man, living in San Rafael and works in San Francisco in the growing medical group. He commutes to work via the Ferry. He has been married for 8 years and has one child, a girl. He volunteers at his daughter's school (in the classroom) and is act member of the PTA. He is 5' 11, moderately athletic, plays Basketball at the local YMCA once a week. Also is an amateur musician often playing guitar with his wife and daughter at home.

Work Environment

He works in a growing medical practice that currently has 15 doctors each with a full load of patients. His role within the organization is to act as a coordinator between all of the different doctors. He has a range of responsibilities that include running the office, coordinating with external vendors, managing physical assets, etc.

Bart is an experienced computer user and is capable of using the standard office tools to accomplish his job. He regularly uses email, calendaring, and todo lists. He also uses standard office tools like Excel and Word and deals regularly with a variety of documents (Some of these documents he owns, some he collaborates on).

Bart uses Smart Phones, his work computer and home computer when working on tasks. One of the challenges he faces is dealing with multiple environments and managing his tasks across those environments. Bart is willing to look at new technology when it has been evaluated by early adopters. Most of his task management is done via email, he has not adopted other environments. Bart will often use folders and flagging to keep track of important tasks and items that need his attention. He will use tools like Yahoo! Instant messenger to communicate with other people in the organization quickly.

Bart doesn't travel very much for his job, usually a work related conference once or twice a year. Bart is an important connection point in the organization and when he is gone, his presence is sorely missed. (This usually discourages Bart from traveling more).

Bart is so knowledgeable about the details of the organization that he is often contacted via many modes of communication for information on various topics (i.e. Where can I find the document about the latest medical plan changes? Where is the proposal for drug testing from the drug companies)

Bart went to a major university and is well connected to others in his field. He spends some of his time keep his network of connections alive and regularly will draw on that network for resources, advice, etc. Most of this communication happens via his smart phone or email.

Home Environment

His wife has a paper based appointment book where she tracks important events for the entire family. She contacts him frequently throughout the day to coordinate new events on the calendar or tasks that she needs him to accomplish (many of these calls deal with trivial things like picking up bread on the way home). His wife frequently expresses concern about her lack of visibility into his day to day calendar especially around work.
