0.7 Status

Work on Chandler 0.7 is currently in progress.

The Vision

0.7 is a first taste of the original Chandler vision, as it will be embodied in 1.0

The specific goals for 0.7

  • Build on the 0.6 Experimentally Usable Calendar and Continue to support and make improvements to Personal and Collaborative Calendaring Workflows for our 0.6 Dogfood Calendar users.
  • Support light-weight Scheduling and Invitation workflows.
  • Implement Plausible Dashboard to support Personal and Collaborative Task Management.
  • Modularize developer APIs.

Release process

In keeping with our intent to further mature the product, the release process will be slightly modified to allow us to make incremental progress on other parts of the application in parallel with enhancements and fixes to improve day-to-day user experience for our current Calendar Dogfooders.

We have decided to stage 0.7 feature development over 3 milestones, which we call Alpha releases (Alpha2, Alpha3, Alpha4) Each Alpha release is approximately 2 months in duration. We also intend on staging calendar bug fixes and enhancements in each mini release so that existing users will be able to upgrade and take advantage of improvements without having to wait for the final 0.7 release. We realize that the Alpha releases will be riskier for users because they will not be put through the same rigorous QA process as a full release. However, Dogfooders have a choice as to whether or not they want to upgrade and they will be provided with a data migration path.

New feature work such as the Scheduling and Dashboard will be phased over the course of the three Alphas as to provide minimally coherent sets of functionality that are useful for either internal user testing or experimental usage by Dogfooders. We will ensure that new feature work, although incomplete, will not interfere with Dogfooders' ability to download Chandler and continue Dogfooding the Calendar.

We will be addressing a number of other areas on an ongoing basis throughout 0.7, such as Performance.

Product Planning and Roadmap

OSAF is continuing to work towards a 1.0 Product Vision and Roadmap. The most significant shift in mindset really involves thinking about OSAF's projects (Chandler, Cosmo and Scooby) as a single, integrated Ecosystem: How they work together to solve a coherent set of User Problems. Planning efforts are focused around defining and building this Ecosystem of products and services.

In an effort to get a usable product out to the market sooner, we are looking at extending 0.7 one or two Alphas to get to a Beta version of our 1.0 product in a 1 year timeframe. In parallel, we will work towards a Cosmo 0.X and Scooby 0.X that coincides with this timeframe.
