Post to Wiki and dev list.
Proposal is written and ready for feedback, another round of discussions.

I've posted the proposal to the Wiki and the dev list. I ended up deciding to use HTML. This will offend Wiki people because I didn't use Wiki test, and will offend e-mail people because I didn't use plain text. We'll see how this works out for both communities and adjust

Project : Chandler development / Framework / Third party / wxPython
PersonGoalStatusPlanned this weekProgress this week
Robin DunnOne of the testers noticed that the time needed to Blit bitmaps to a DC on MS Windows has almost doubled in 2.5 vs. 2.4.CompletedTry some of the ideas that have come from wx-dev and see if they make any differnece. I am grasping at staws here though...This has definitly been a learning exercise for me, and I now know more about bitmaps on win32 than I ever wanted to, (and it still probably only scratches the surface...)

I found that there was an error in the new wxBitmap::Create function in that it was always using CreateBitmap? in the test case instead of CreateCompatibleBitmap?, and so a conversion had to happen in Blit and that is what was slowing things down. (Forcing it to use a 24-bit DIB also helped restore most of the speed.)

I proposed a fix and it was discussed and I'll be checking it in today (2/2/2004).

Robin DunnDo a SWIG modification that will assist in autogenerating wxPython class reference documentation. In progressI got a suggestion for an enhancement for my patch. Will check it out and integrate if it makes sense.I'm still trying to make some sense of the enhancement (it allows more detailed docs to be associated with parameters by using a %typmap) but I'm currently leaning a bit in the negative direction on it.

I did make another change though. I changed my "addtofunc" feature to "pythonappend" (to be a bit consistent with "pythoncode") and also added "pythonprepend".
Robin DunnWork on tools to extract the docstrings and detatiled docs from the SWIG XML output and put it into a simplified format that can be used for creating online HTML (or other formats) for wxPython reference documentation. In progressWrite a tool (coordinating with community volunteers) that uses the new XML format to build input for a standard Python documenter tool.

Decide which markup format should be used (evaluate ReST? and epydoc formats.)

Nothing this week. Riaan is out of town and didn't send me his current work before he left.
Robin DunnChange wxMenu such that the menu item is returned from the methods that add an item to the menu. Also fix things so that if an ID of -1 is used then a new ID will be generated just like is done for the window classes. In progressTry to get the -1 --> generated ID code approved. Not done as the bitmap issue dominated this week's time, although I've tested it on my machines.
Robin DunnChapter reivews and editing for the wxPython book. In progressChapter reivews and editing for the wxPython book. Chapter 8 is ready for review.Chapter 8 reviewed and edited. Also reviewed recent changes to 3 other chapters, correcting a few typos and inaccuracies.
Robin DunnContinue testing and fixing problems with the new wxPython. In progressContinue testing and fixing problems with the new wxPython.Fixed a minor problem with my EVT_WINDOW_CREATE fix for wxMac,

Fixed some inconsistencies in parameter names and used the new pythonprepend SWIG feature to minimize backwards compatibility problems with the change.

Updated the SWIG runtime used by wxPython.

etc.

Robin DunnWork on adding more docstrings for the SWIG gererated functions and methods. In progressWork on adding more docstrings for the SWIG gererated functions and methods. Not done.
Robin DunnWork on my OSAF bug listIn progressWork on my OSAF bug listNot done
Robin DunnwxMSW does not allow Shift-Tab to be captured by KEY or CHAR events, even if the wxWANTS_CHARS style is used. If the window is within a control container (wxPanel, etc.) then it is always used as a navigation key. In progressSee if there is a way to make the change and still keep everybody happy. Not done as the bitmap issue dominated this week's time.
Robin DunnDo another test release of wxPython 2.5.Not startedDo another test release of wxPython 2.5.Not done. Things are not yet ready for a new release.

Heikki ToivonenTalkback for Chandler. In progress Discussed Talkback with Chris McAfee?. (Talkback is a system that "phones home" when softeware crashes, including a stack trace of where the crash happened, which is a great help in fixing software problems.) Emailed the people that set up the Mozilla Talkback to see what we would need to do to get it for Chandler. If we used Gecko, we might be able to ride on Mozilla's license. We might also get a reasonably priced license to use Talkback because we are an open source project, even without Mozilla. In any case, due to significant hardware and software costs it seems like the only cost-effective solution might be to piggyback on Mozilla's talkback server if that was technically possible.
