In short, Chandler needs a way to keep small bits of text at hand and readily searchable--something that Outlook-like PIMs do rather poorly.

Scenario: I'm on the phone, and the person on the other end is reading off a URL (or some useful statistic, or a new idea, or ...). I could scribble it on the nearest scrap of paper, but in a PIM it will last longer, not get lost, and be readily searchable.

Scenario: I'm writing a book. I need to keep track of many small bits of personal information. These need to be rapidly searchable and 'scannable' to retrieve the information I need.

This feature fits in well with the Chandler data model as described at ItemsAndAttributesDataModelIssues, and would provide immediately searchable access to information, as described at Jungle.Search.

The level of ambition for the 1.0 release should be signifigantly less that full-fledged NoteTakingApplications?, like OneNote?, or KnowledgeManagentApplications? or DocumentManagementApplications?, or even EccoPro20030116 or Zoot?.

In other words, provide a small foundation, and we'll start working towards greater things. smile

Notes should be something well integrated. I mean I should be able to attach notes to mails, instant messaging logs, contacts...
