Notes from All Hands Meeting 20 May 2004
Announcements
Brian Skinner will be taking a leave of absence for about six weeks starting on Monday, 24 May. He will be available for helping with a smooth transition of his open projects.
Repository Demo
Andi demoed big speed improvements in remote repository access. By transferring a group of items together as an item cloud -- a set of items that semantically go together -- he is able to make significantly fewer round trips, which makes remote repository access much faster. About six months ago Andi tried to access items in a remote repository as local items, and couldn't get it to do a round trip in a usable way. At this meeting, he gave essentially the same demo, but this time the transfers were much faster.
His next steps are to put in access control, so that next time he does this demo, different people will have access to different parts of the data.
UI Design Demo
Mimi demoed the latest from the design team. Here are the URLs from her demo:
UI Implementation (CPIA) demo
Jed demoed the latest version of Chandler, and showed tabbed views and the preliminary drag-and-drop functionality. Any item in Chandler can be dragged, dropped, and can receive any other item. John pointed out that there had been a lot of work "under the hood" to refactor code recently.
Comments from Mitch
- Yesterday's OSAF board meeting went fine. Chao and Lisa presented to the board and the board continues to encourage Mitch to think about how to make this train run on time.
- Mitch and Lisa are thinking about our continuing evolution in the product roadmap and overall schedules. This has led to some modifications in status tracking and milestones. Lisa says that the biggest issue right now is the triage of what is going to be in Canoga and what will not be in Canoga.
- Mitch and Chao are discussing what it means for Chao to take a leadership role in the productization of Chandler - to make and ship a product. We will need to sort out how to deal with marketing, product marketing, etc. This will be at the same time exciting and will involve some hard decisions.
- The CSG folks will be coming out for two days in August for a summit.
