i18n, dialogs and wx

Philippe's Notes

Use of XRC

  • We use message factory : import OSAFMessageFactory as
  • This construct can't be used in the built-ins (like wx) so we can't use XRC
  • Or we need to redirect the wx_GetTranslation() from wx to our message factory
  • We have few dialogs using XRC so we may as well rewrite them without using it
  • We already use the Utils package, looks enough for all our dialogs
  • We use also system dialogs and those need the system to be launched in the relevant language (using the -locale is not enough)
  • That being said, letting devs (especially parcel and other contributors) use XRC would be great
  • John, Brian and Markku to look into how to make XRC work with our translated .po file
  • Port the current XRC dialogs to CPIA and wxPython or other solution, Markku to work on this

Other wx / i18n issues

  • Markku and Brian will work on doing a list of what needs to be done in wx
  • Markku will modify the functional tests to support localization testing
  • Could be that some things don't localize well, we need to experiment ETA : 1 month
  • We'll try the primary locale from the OS in 1.0. We won't get the fallback locales for now (will need OS specific SWIG wrapped C code).
  • SoC wx: there's a project to have wxStrings being UTF-8
  • We won't support bidi and top-down layout. wx does not support that anyway. There's also a SoC wx project for bidi.
  • ICU has a layout manager. There's a project (long term) to get wx to support that but won't happen before wxTNG gets out.
  • IME: works somewhat, some bugs though, Markku will log those

Localization

  • We'd like to distribute translation separately (so we keep download small). We want to use eggs for that.
  • How Python eggs are going to localize?
  • Need to check with PJE
  • We wanted to have that by alpha3
  • Note: we agreed that error messages are not supposed to be localized

Tools

  • Extraction of po template from Chandler: use tools/createpot
  • Translation: use poedit

Summary, List of Actions

  • Translate funct tests (Markku)
  • Check the XRC things (Brian, John, Markku)
  • Check the egg things (Brian, PJE, Markku)
  • Check wx issues (Brian, Robin)
