Confusion over how Collections work

  • e.g. they are not Folders
  • Items can exist in more than 1 collection
  • The "My" collection is a Library collection

Confusion over Overlays.

People simply don't expect the functionality. Checking off the collection you currently have selected doesn't "do" anything, so users doesn't get any feedback to help them figure out what the "checkbox" icon does.

Proposal

  1. Change the name of the "MY" collections to something that communicates:
    • This is a Library collection where All of your "My" stuff automatically goes, no matter where you created it.
    • This collection cuts across all your collections the way that the All App area cuts across all the App areas
    • Ideas: All my items/mail/tasks/events, Library, Dashboard
  2. Make it clear that Collections are essentially Attribute-based Search Folders, just like the Flagged items Folder in Outlook.
    • e.g. Institute Attribute Types and display Attribute Type icons for user-defined collections in the sidebar
  3. Ship out of the box with 2 user-defined collections: Home and Work. Check Work so that it is overlayed with the All collection.
