Server Meeting Notes: June 15, 2006

Cosmo Demo Update

  • Cosmo demo currently has an issue with larger calendars and syncing with Chandler. With large calendars, you can experience slow performance which results in timeouts from Chandler.
    • Chandler alpha build is being respun with a much higher timeout threshold.
    • Cosmo team is profiling the problem in an attempt to determine root cause.
  • The issue is testable and repeated.
  • Details on the issue are being tracked in Bugzilla.
  • Solving this issue is important for Chandler 0.7alpha3.

Unresponsive Cosmo issue

  • problem: Server is chugging along nicely, all connections are auth'ed, then eventually we get a series of 401s for about 30-40 seconds. After that, the server will hang hard. You must 'kill -9' the process.
  • When the server is restarted, you get a series of 401s before it starts running again.
  • Action: Jared to do a thread dump when this situation happens.

Performance Testing Discussion

  • John Townsend recently posted an email to the mailing list about putting in place some basic performance tests for Cosmo. We would use these tests to baseline the performance of common client operations and then run these tests regularly to ensure that Cosmo performance is stable.
  • In addition, Jared would put in place some live tests on cosmo demo that would measure operations over time. For example, every 15 minutes, do a PROPFIND on a large calendar and store away the data on that test. Then we can measure that over time to see how larger data sets affect the performance of the server.
    • Mikeal requested that we gather basic statistics on the account when running these tests. For example, number of events in the calendar, number of calendars the user has, etc. (More detail on this later)
  • Jared mentioned that he would like to develop an overall monitoring plan. John Townsend asked him to post this to the Cosmo list when its ready.

Hiring

  • We have two open positions in our groups: One for Cosmo and one for Scooby. The job descriptions are on the OSAF site.
  • Current status: We have a number of resumes we are planning to phone interview. Looking for more resumes.
  • We have developed phone screens for each of the positions and will be using those as standard phone interviews.
