While the first half of the paper was "Design Philosophy-centric", this second half of the paper will be more "Design Solution-centric".
We will evaluate several different existing Organizational paradigms both with respect to
PrinciplesOfGrok discussed above as well as how well they perform as data stores for targeted search and retrieval of information. (Use case 1 in
WhyDoPeopleOrganize.)
The discussion is somewhat circular, because a major premise of this paper (as elaborated upon in
IsSearchThePanacea) is that in order to really be able to Search for information well, you have to first and foremost be able to grok your data.
The four criteria we are going to use are:
- Top-down search: How well does the system provide you with a guided navigation of the data?
- Top-down search: How well does the system adapt to you when you decide to change the destination?
- Bottom-up workflow and Usability: How easy is it for you to describe items so you can find them later?
- Gaining and Losing semantics
- Labeling affordances
- How well does the system adapt to changing data set?
