Notes: Logo Inspirations

I took a a bunch of photos which I was sending back and forth to the design team while I was on holiday in Asia. Among our group, we kept seeing things which were simlar to ther things so I'm just using this a place to keep track of all the images we've been discussing. I thought I would just put them up for inspirations.

Petroglyph ideas

This is something I found in while driving back home from work. In the close up you'll notice the artist actually meant for it to be a labyrinth.

Geometric shape ideas

I was inspired after reading an article in Newsweek about the new Olympic pool in Beijing. If you haven't heard about it, it's very interesting. Designed by engineers/architects from China & Australia– it has an environmental advantage as well as the hexagon patterns. I was thinking sorta like a mix between the 'block.png' and the 'chandler-logo-with-hexes.png' on the wiki. "Imagine a bubble bath, and running a knife through the bubble and cutting those bubbles into a square. That is literally the structure of the building,"

There's more written about it here. You can also look up for more photos in Getty Images, do a search for 'Olympic Pool in Beijing'.

When walking through Aoyama in Tokyo, there was a shop which was just opening and saw this installation. I like the sophisticated 'cute-ness' in the teddybear and how it related to the geometric shapes. I wish I could render it better as an icon.

Investigating animals as characters in a logo

Found these traditional Japanese stuff toys in a store in Kyoto.

Owl as good luck charms: Owls represent perpetual youth and longevity. Avoidance of trouble. Improvement in academic ability . Prosperity in business. The flexibility in an owl's neck represents all-round visibility. Therefore, the owl is considered a lucky bird bringing prosperity in business and good fortune. "Fukurou", the Japanese rendering of an owl, sounds like the term "fukurou" (avoidance of trouble) "furou" (perpetual youth and longevity), and "fukuro" (fountain of wisdom and improvement in the academic ability), consequently, the bird brings good fortune.

Another sea mammal I was thinking of is the manatee, which are not quite on the endangered list, but is threatened. I believe they also travel in packs. They communicate with each other with clicks and chirps.
