Bug List 4 March 2005

Katie's summary notes:

• one decision we should make is whether or not to tackle an overall font cleanup pass, sensitive to platforms. What work we did do we'd likely have to refactor, but that might not be such a big deal. I'll investigate the feasibility of this.
• a second decision is whether or not we can do some of the sidebar visual changes to give better feedback even in .5 -- I'll investigate this as well with John.

Sheila's summary notes:

• Put together a list of all the blockers and blockers under consideration at CurrentZeroPointFiveBlockingBugs.
• I have reservations about tackling the font cleanup at this point so we should discuss the cost of doing a first pass.

List of bugs and issues Mitch found playing with 0.4.08

Generally, the interaction of the sidebar and the app bar isn�t right. It�s confusing.

If I select "All" in Sidebar, Calendar in app bar, the display looks wrong because there is a calendar week view in summary, and some other possibly non-calendar item such as an emnail in detail, and therefore summary and detail don�t match which they should.

• Katie: we fell short of getting all of the feedback in the sidebar, which affects the usability of the sidebar. It is possible that there are some quick things we can do to help in .5, but I think this will really benefit from a round of iteration -- a few weeks. We were planning on doing this at the very beginning of .6, overlapping with planning for .6.
• Sheila/Aparna: there are probably a few discrete tasks that could be evaluated.
  • icons next to out of the box collections, these change per app bar selection for All collection.
  • All collection text changes depending on app bar selection.
  • The collection name in the sidebar becomes grey if we have selected that collection and an app bar filter and there are no items in the summary view.
  • Selecting a new collection in the sidebar automatically ensures that some item in the summary view is selected to update the detail view. If no items in the summary view, the detail view blank (with the feedback in sidebar, this would probably make more sense.

Visual Appearance / Behavior

clicking the �task� app bar icon should but doesn't display tasks. disable?

• Katie: should be a blocking bug. Might be fixed this morning. (Mar 4)
• Sheila/Aparna: This might be the "left of out 0.5 sidebar" item where the collection name in sidebar should indicate that there are no items in the summary view (greyed out).

status feedback line when I try to send email (in Windows) doesn't seem to be present

• Sheila/Aparna: Cannot reproduce
  • 2 forms of feedback present
  • 1st status is Sending Mail....
  • 2nd status is Mail "subject" sent

arrow keys not only don�t work but blank the screen

• Katie: new bug, we didn't attempt to get keyboard stuff like this right. Probably not a good idea to attempt in .5, as we will run into some known widgets issues. Good idea to relnote this.
• Aparna/Sheila: Bug:2611 assigned to 0.6 unless we decide it should be otherwise.

no field should have default text �untitled� in it. should be blank?

• Katie: probably easy to tweak for .5, first step is to be in agreement about desired behavior
• Sheila/Aparna: As designed by Mimi, need a Todo for discussing this further.

should be able to create a new event by dragging

• Katie: I disabled this because it was too slow to be responsive at the time, and thus was more confusing. Alec or I can look at this and perhaps do it for .5.
• Sheila/Aparna: we were confused by what this was.

deletion takes too long, should be quicker

• Katie: we should create a bug for this specific case, probably won't get done in .5
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2613 assigned to 0.5 but not blocking. Due to deletion/trash getting scoped out of 0.5 we didn't prioritize this. We can revisit for 0.5.

need Chandler icon on the desktop for Windows?

• Katie: we could have bear look at this.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2612 assigned to Bear for 0.5. Installer weren't orginally a real deliverable for 0.5...more like a bonus feature.

generally, appearance of field labels, field contents, and other text in summary, detail views, app bar and side bar need to be rationalized for face, size, centering

• Katie: though its painful, I think we should tackle this for the detail view in .6, not .5. I'll ask around and see if we can do a pass through the fonts. We were only careful about this in the calendar view.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2414 assigned to 0.6.

some text in detail fields appear in bold, other in normal

• Katie: similar to above, high priority for early .6

font size in sidebar is smaller than other fonts

• Katie: similar to above
• Sheila/Aparna: We can't reproduce this.

fromt/to/sub field titles should be further left in Windows

• Katie: this should be .6
• Sheila/Aparna: This is by design, the alignment is fields lined up to the left and text justified to the right.

left margin of detail view in wide layout doesn�t look like left margin of summary view - thickness, shadow?

• Katie: this should be .6
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2618

the bottom margin of the summary and detail views aren�t even

• Katie:
• Sheila/Aparna: There is a gap on email messages under the notes field only because we have that area for attachments display and in the case of non appearing there is a gap. We weren't able to get the attachment gif that Mimi wanted and this was Bryan's temporary solution for 0.5.

three columns in summary view don�t extend to right edge of pane

• Katie: I think we have an existing bug for this, and it is not blocking. We could nominate it for blocking.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:1942. I believe this is also a problem on the sidebar.

if there�s nothing in a collection it should be grayed out and/or not selectable � or say empty or something

• Katie: yes, this falls into the sidebar-feature-that-didn't-make-it. We could ask john how hard it is to get it in.
• Sheila/Aparna: Agreed.

we shouldn�t have 2 labels both saying "all", 1 in sidebar, one in app bar. It's confusing if there are going to be icons in the left column of summary, they need to be there not just for events

• Katie: probably not hard to get other icons, if we get them from mimi.
• Sheila/Aparna: This was in the 0.5 sidebar spec an we should have the icons available if we decide to add to 0.5 list.

clicking in column heads should do something

• Katie: it should sort. This is a bug we had decided to do at the beginning of .6. We could ask john to take a stab at it, but it might require some work for andi, so it would land after March 14.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:1230.

rephrase splash screen wording "Chandler 1.0 is still under early construction"

• Katie: we should create a blocking bug, we just need the updated image from mimi
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2615. Made blocking for 0.5 and assigned to Mimi.

defaults to �wide� layout on medium width screens. Must have both layouts for normal and wide, and ideally the right default. Otherwise display is scrunched on PC.

• Katie: Yup, we haven't attempted this one yet. Would be useful to have feedback on whether or not this is blocking.
• Sheila/Aparna: We need to understand what this is in more detail.

problems with changes in summary and detail views not propagating promptly

• Katie: We've considered these bugs blocking bugs, and fixed a bunch of them today (March 4).
• Sheila/Aparna: We can retest the latest build and identify any additional cases if they are not fixed.

doesn�t display overlapping events

• Katie: This one is my bad, it just didn't make it. We could add it to the blocking list.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2523. We added to the blocking list for 0.5.

text inside pulldown menus looks different than in field names

• Katie: general font cleanup
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:1942.

cursor doesn�t change when I drag

• Katie: an oversight, we should create a bug. Not so hard to fix, we could try it in .5.
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2616 and added to blocking list.

doesn�t scroll window down when I drag event off it

• Katie: should be a bug, will need to investigate to see if doable in .5
• Sheila/Aparna: Bug:2617. and added to 0.5 list for investigation, not blocking yet.

two different sizes and styles of icons need to be rationalized

• Katie: mac bugs with png transparency, toolbar buttons affect this. Stefan is fixing these bugs. Aside from that, not sure if this is an issue of not having put in mimi's desired icons, or problems with icons mimi has given us. We can do image changes in .5.
• Sheila/Mooney: I believe there are a couple of issues. There are limitations with the Mac that will probably be addressed with next wxWidgets. We are looking at using various icons for different states, Mimi and John have been discussing this but wasn't on agenda for 0.5.

no preview of events in minical

• Katie: we removed this from .5 midway, too much work for .5.
• Sheila/Aparna: On the 0.6 feature list.

will need more than 3 columns to be useful in summary view

• Katie: this is a key project for .6, high priority -- I am personally signing up to rationalize it. It is a problem of design (both mimi design and engineering content model design). We just didn't have enough people to address it in .5 and moved it to .6 at the very beginning of the cycle.
• Sheila/Aparna: There will be a specific summary table view spec for 0.6 that will tackle this.

no ability to select multiple days in minical

• Katie: should be feature for .6.
• Sheila/Aparna: Will add to 0.6 feature list and specs.

Mac-specific issues

Mac boot time is stil extremely slow

• Katie: we know this, have a bug, moving forward talking to berkeley db people about this.

large Mac footprint (30MB), Windows only 14MB?

• Katie: yes, known problem, several factors
