Walked past Apple's new iPod variant: Jog mode or Random mode thing-me and thought about PDAs and how the Chandler app would suck on a PDA because it's way too big.

But then I thought about how really most users, most of the time are in a different mode when they're on-the-go with their PDA. They're not in I'm doing PIM maintenance work mode organizing your folders and trying to see the big picture. Instead, they're in magnifying mode, trying to zoom in on something specific to retrieve information OR trying to enter in information on the fly.

And I realized that actually on the Desktop, this is true too. Why have your PIM open all the time. Most people do, but it seems like overkill. Shouldn't PIMs have a mini-mode like MP3 players?

Mini-mode features:

  • XP-like Toasts or Growl for OSX that give you notifications of new mails, etc.
  • Search and advanced search (ie. Attribute-based mini-browser)
  • Ability to triage items as they come in
  • CLI-like way to enter new items
