DAV SERVER

Need: Since the major feature for 0.5 is usable calendar sharing, we should have an easy way for the general public to experience Chandler Sharing at the 0.5 release. Minimum requirements will be 2 Chandler 0.5 clients and a WebDAV account on a server somewhere.

The question is, If after the 0.5 release a casual user wants to download and check out Chandler Sharing, and doesn't already have a WebDAV account what should they do?

Solution Pro Con added to 0.5 menu
OSAF Hosted (mod_dav, etc.) pilikia.osafoundation.org We control user experience, performance, reliability, compatibility, etc.)   Yes - default
We gain experience with the requirements, level-of-effort, problems, etc. with hosting a DAV server for Chandler sharing
Resource costs for setup, maintainance, storage, bandwidth, etc.) Someone will need to attend to the server and monitor it's status on an ongoing basis (not just for a week or two at the 0.5 release)
Impression created that one may need a "special" non-standard version of WebDAV to support Chandler Sharing

Sharemation demo server Impression established early that one can use a "standard" 3rd-party WebDAV solution to support Chandler Sharing   Yes
No direct OSAF resource cost
OSAF doesn't get direct learning experience with hosting
Have to rely on 3rd-party for demo reliability, compatibility, performance, with no direct service-level agreement (since this is Xythos' demo server).
Xythos doesn't have to do anything to accommodate the additional load from Chandler Sharing Trials (they already have about 65,000 accounts on the server - new accounts from Chandler 0.5 lookie-loos will hardly be noticeable to them)
A Sharemation trial account is fast and easy to setup online. No time limit, only a 5MB data limit (way more than is needed to demonstrate Chandler Sharing)
According to the Xythos Sharemation Product Manager, Xythos is following CalDAV development and intends to support that in their product. They are interested in working with OSAF. Using them early helps establish a good working relationship with a Chandler ecosystem partner.

My Docs Online! This is another "standard" WebDAV hosting service They require you to jump through hoops to fill out a form and "request a 15-day free trial" - Sharemation doesn't have a salesperson contact you and has no time limit (only a 5 MG data limit for the free account) No

Venue Communications easy to setup a free demo account. Data gets wiped each day. Yes
primarily configured to test iCalendar sharing, but seems to work just fine for Chandler sharing too.

Venue Communications WebDAV Test Account

Your test account Login information is below. We can customize
in any way to meet your individual needs. Please contact us by
replying to this email or calling us Toll Free 866-836-8301 if
you have special requirements.

This same test account is shared by all who request the free
test. If you pubish to the webDAV server and find other
calendars already there, that is because others may be testing
it at the same time. If your calendar is named the same as an
existing calendar, your calendar will replace the existing
one. Each day we delete any calendars that were not
unpublished after testing.
