Started looking at M2Crypto+Twisted again (Bug:1747). Went through the comments to my last try on Twisted mailing list, and found mentions about someone else doing this kind of thing with another SSL implementation, TLS Lite. Google found the project, and after a brief look it might be exactly what I need to do for M2Crypto. Sent an email to the author.
