Notes
Brian, Sheila and Mimi had a brief call about email plans for Beta.
Brian had a few questions about our target users
- Brian
- Do we really expect our target users to have iMAP accounts?
- We don't have target data about small groups and iMAP usage.
- If you aren't in a corp network he doesn't see people using iMAP - unless we are in an enterprise system.
- OSAF has IT so we can have an iMAP server.
- Most likely people have POP.
- Sheila
- What does CC use? Probably iMAP.
- We could look at some out or target small groups.
- Mimi
- Early adopters will be fairly technically savvy. Sm business might not have their own iMAP server but many of our possible target users.
- Stake in the ground -> we think the our users will have iMAP.
- It would be worthwhile having some kind of bridge to iMAP.
IMAP Folders
- Ideas that came up
- Selecting folders but make it smarter - todo vs calendar folders. We can have those triaged in the right way.
- When you setup the iMAP accounts in Chandler, these folders automatically get created on the server - predefined.
- Designate folders - Todo folder = Tasks, Events folder = Events (we would like to have this behavior anyway). It would be a message by default. Another folder for only mail. Chandler gives the items a stamped context.
- Good idea and a good place to start on this.
- Mimi: Does Chandler have to be running when you drop the stuff in the folder - when you start it up, it just works.
- Sheila: Could you specify any number of iMap accounts? Yes, they would all have these predefined folders.
- Sheila: Would we also have POP support - Yes.
Other Features
- Chandler header
- You can receive updates to items from other Chandler users so you don't have to pulldown the entire email inbox.
- We will lose the header if you reply from another email client - PPD thinks this is ok
- Emailing collections
- Benefits in web mail type environment.
- Non-Chandler desktop users.
- Proof of concept up and running - Jared working on this.
- Jared says this is all work for him - Brian isn't so sure about this.
- Need to send summary of what we are going to do for Beta - basic plan (Sheila will talk to Jared).
- SPAM
- Doable but we should think about whether or not we need it.
- Pulling in iMAP folders - these will have already gone through a filter.
- Leave it for Alpha6 for now and we will see where we are.
- Brian thinks there are some doable options here.
Staging Features
- Sheila: iMAP or Chandler headers - what would you do first? Currently they are both scheduled for Alpha5 because we don't know the scope.
- Brian says both of these options are doable and relatively straight-forward to implement.
- Phasing really depends and he wants to do a bit more thinking about this.
Next Actions
- Sheila will work on email spec focussing on detailing iMAP and Chandler headers features
- Sheila will also talk to Jared about a summary for the emailing collections.
- Next meeting will be with Brian when he is in town. We can review the detailed spec.
- In the meantime, all discussions should be on the design list.
- Sheila and Mimi will reconcile subscribing to iMAP folders with data in/out goals for Alpha6. We may need to stage some of the data in/out for Alpha5.
