Priscilla’s Usage of Chandler 0.6.1 in March 2006
Here are some top issues I ran into this past four weeks:
- Added more collections into my side bar. I have about 8 calendars (not including 'My calendar'. Performance issues is really starting test my patience. It's not just waiting for the beach ball. When I double click on the canvas just trying to add a simple event, it will take up to approximately 1 minute and 11 seconds, 67 split seconds.
- Having clicked several times I click randomly all over the calendar canvas, sometimes ending up with 2 events. Due to the performance frustration, when clicking all over the canvas, the event rarely ends up on the exact time slot and will have to edit the exact time on the event details.
- Always editing in the event details are sometimes a problem as there are times when I type in the wrong year, and then my event is lost. ie. I type in 1/1/2006 (as a end date for recurring events) and then have to find my event to fix my mistake.
- Ran into errors when syncing my calendar at home. The cause was using my calendar as a test for sweeping my Chandler calendar into Scooby. Learned not to use my calendar for demoing for the staff meeting and recreated a demo calendar
- Tried to use task list, and the performance/behavior issues are still too daunting for me to use.
- Had to remove the repository again this month and re-subscribe to all my calendars/collections again! (There's got to be a better way then having to do this one by one!)
- Tried to copy and paste an event, and the behavior was awkward, not consistent to my expectations as a user. See cut and paste entry below.
- Learned how to send meeting invites. Having a bit of difficulty finding the 'send' button and/or when the meeting moves, a 'resend' button. (that of course does not exist yet!)
Notes on Chandler 0.6.1 Usage:

The same thing happened as the left side bar was on Katie's Calendar. I double clicked on the calendar and it automatically went to placed an event on Priss Calendar. The highlight was still on Katie's calendar. Once again I tried to reproduce this again, and it did indeed have the right behavior. Will send issue to the design list.
- 5:39PM
Tried to check if the Gavin Newsome talk was on the office calendar (forgetting that the office calendar in Chandler is not updated). I clicked on the (sync) icon to refresh, and realized what is strange is that the circles in-front of the text is clickable, and the download is not. And when I double click on the icon, it allows me to change the label of the collection.

Jeremy had added a new event onto my calendar. I tried to refresh my collections and came up w/ two error messages. Sheila's calendar might not be published and I have an error on my calendar too...how odd? Different icon sets too.
- 8:25pm
Was trying to sync my calendar at home and find out why there are errors on my calendar. Must have been when I was testing w/ viewing my Chandler calendar on Scooby. So now I'm trying to figure out how to pick up my calendar again on the Cosmo server. And am syncing my calendar w/ Jeremy.
I added my mail accidentally and have 'in', 'out', I've tried everything to reset my calendar, but unfortunately it looks like I'll have to reset my repository.

Earlier today I gave a demo on sharing one of my collections and viewing it in Scooby. Unfortunately I have not been able to 'unpublish' the collection once I have published it in Scooby.

In today's staff meeting it was asked if people have put in their PTO in the test 'Chandler' calendar. And so I realized I only had the read only ('real') calendar which you're supposed to send a message to Esther so she can put it in on the calendar. And I was forwarded the 'read/write' test 'Chandler' calendar where I can add my PTO.
So first I feel like a master at this now. I 'subscribe' then see an 'Sharing' error message:
So thinking I could troubleshoot this. I was thinking I need to delete the existing office calendar. So I unpublish, which worked. I delete the collection from the 'Edit' menu. It worked. Then realizing the two files were unrelated, I tried to subscribe to the original '.ics' office calendar file and it would give me an error as well. Solution: dump repository and start again. I'm now building a pretty large collection (six collections) of calendars on my side bar.

This is my second attempt to use the task list in Chandler. I know I should have documented from before, but it's hard when you to dogfood this item because I usually need to write them down quickly and so I end up just using my paper calendar for this. So I try again, and when I click on the 'check icon, Tasks' on the top, beachball. Then I select 'New' and disaster! This was the weirdness I had last time that turned me off. The page jumps to the 'All' section instead of adding a new task or line item in my task list.

I tried to subscribe...Chandler crashed.I have the error rpt. so then I started Chandler again..
and wanted to subscribe to the same url again..and it says 'I'm already subscribed"...need to dump repository. Or is there a better way? I ask on IRC.
JohnA? takes my question. tell me to file a bug.

Updated all of my calendars again from yesterday & this moring. I now have a total of 7 calendars, 8 if you include the 'My Calendar' which is really just a blank calendar. Wish I can delete it. Let's try. Looked under the 'Edit' menu, nope. Doesn't seem to exist. In any case, I try to add an event onto my calendar again. I have the 'PPD' calendar on 'show' with the check mark. And when I try to click on the calendar, the calendar switches to the 'PPD' calendar, because there is an event on the same time as the event I want to add onto my calendar. Ugh. I do this twice, thinking it might be a mistake and the same thing happens. The only way around this is if either I 1. uncheck the PPD calendar, or 2. click randomly around the calendar somewhere, then input my event and alter the time in the event details.

So I'm trying to send a message of an even for the first time. I first hover through the icons and for some reason I don't even even see the envelop icon. I think it's mainly 'cause I have the word 'stamping' embedded in my brain. Ugh. I then look up to the menu items and start at 'Collections' and start moving to the right..'Test' then move back to the 'Item' and find 'Message', so I select and the two boxes appear. The 'From' box has 'me' already default, but I'm thinking I should put in my e-mail address? Doesn't seem clear, so then I put in my the e-mail address to the 'to' boxes. Once done, I'm not sure how to send? Hmm...I then see the 'envelop' icon and click on it thinking it is to send, but in fact it made the 'from'/'to' boxes disappear. I click on it again and loose my e-mail information.

I found the 'Send' button at the top of the calendar. Funny how you look at something everyday and learn to ignore things. So a wishlist for me, add the send button right after the input fields. Takes me about 8 mins to set up my account information. Mainly for me to dig up the account info. page on the wiki etc. I tested my account twice, asked Dan to take a look at the information I typed up. Looked okay, perhaps the sever was down? No, in fact I typed in my user name wrong, instead of Priscilla Chung, it was just 'priscilla'. So, all the account info. was typed in and I'm ready to send my event to John. I take a look at the 'Send' button and it's grayed out. Ugh. Now what?

So I noticed there were events Mimi had put on the PPD calendar that were not placed on the on the right dates. setting up the PPD calendar. I try to change the event by cutting and pasting. I cut the event first by using ctrl+x, then click the arrow keys at the top to change the weeks, select where the event should go on the calendar palette, and ctrl+p. Nothing. I click back to where the event was placed in the weeks ahead and the event was pasted back to where I deleted. Every time when I double click on the calendar it seems to take about 30 secs to a minute. I double click and wait. I double click and wait. No beach ball is appearing. It just seems to hang for a bit and I'm not sure what is going on, if Chandler is responding to me adding an event. It takes me about 20 mins for me rearrange two events on the PPD calendar and sync the calendar so Ted could see it.

I received an e-mail from Mimi about changing a meeting time and I dragged the event on my calendar to the new time. I want to send her the updated the event information but the 'send' button is disabled. I was not able to update my invitation to Mimi and resend my stamping event to her.
