Interoperability thoughts:
- Import/export
- apps: Eudora, Mozilla, Outlook, Notes, Palm
- PDA Sync, not phones until they get smart enough
- Probably Palm & PocketPC? (blackberry is too tied to enterprise)
- External reference to Chandler items or collections e.g. desktop shortcut or web URL
- Cut/copy/paste and drag and drop
- Lower priority:
- Other file formats (e.g. PDF, doc, xls, mp3 ...)
- Bookmarks? linking, collating web info?
- Web services?
- Relevant PIM interoperation file formats:
- Contacts: vCard
- Calendar: .ics (iCalendar obj), iTip/iMip
- Email: RFC 822, MIME, S/MIME
- X.509 certs
- Standards/Protocols:
- POP, IMAP
- WebDAV
- SyncML
- Privacy/Security: SASL, PGP (?)
- RSS/Atom
- Guiding principles:
- What do early adopters need?
- Focused on individual needs, not group or enterprise
- Do not believe in walled gardens (hence need to export our data)
- Support open standards as a principle in itself, but user needs are foremost
- Focus on PIM application; less focus on Chandler as a repository platform (let open source take care of these needs)
- More work needed:
- Understand scope & limitations of relevant standards
- Understand trends & directions of relevant standards
- Match tech affordances to market needs (?)
